What is Holistic SEO?
First, let’s check out the definitions of holistic and SEO:
From Merriam-Webster:
Holistic: Relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.
From the SEMPO Glossary:
Search Engine Optimization: The act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines. Also called SEO.
The phrase “Search Engine Optimization” is already flawed in the sense that SEO practitioners do not optimize search engines, but rather they optimize websites for better placement in the search engines. Nonetheless, the phrase and abbreviation have been adopted and have become part of the mainstream vocabulary.
Because of the ambiguity and early misunderstandings, the term SEO has been thrown around and used in various fashions. If you get right down to it, however, SEO at its core has to do with getting a site higher in the search engine results for certain keywords. While this is all fine and dandy, I take a holistic approach to SEO where the bottom line is to implement a variety of related marketing practices and techniques to obtain more traffic that converts, and continues to convert over the long-term.
Adding “Holistic” to “SEO” probably does not help in making any more sense in terms of syntax, but I hope to clear things up right here…
My definition of Holistic SEO is:
Holistic SEO: A synergistic website marketing strategy which utilizes a variety of online channels and other related elements of marketing and web development in conjunction with search engine optimization (SEO).
